AGL's after-school program for freshmen was recently named one of the top two Transition to High School Programs in New York City.
AGL+, which provides three days of tutoring and extracurricular programs for all ninth-graders, was named a premier program by the New York's Department of Youth and Community Development.
The school received its award on Thursday, Nov. 19 at a special event in Times Square. Officials from Henry Street Settlement (which coordinates the tutoring), ninth- grade students and teachers were present to receive the award, which includes a $3,000 stipend to fund a freshman trip at the end of the term.
School administrators were thrilled to receive the award because it recognizes all of the hard work being done by students and staff at AGL, said David Glasner, the school's principal.
"I am excited to be part of such a dedicated staff that is serving as a model for New York City schools," Mr. Glasner said.
Mr. Hoover, the school's assistant principal, also noted that the recognition comes at an appropriate time for the school. First quarter report cards are being distributed this week, and the 9th grade set a new AGL record with a pass rate of 97.6 percent.
"The extra tutoring and support has been a big part of the 9th grade's success this year," Mr. Hoover said.
